What you're actually paying for
Strip away the marketing and every profit app on the Shopify App Store is selling some combination of three things. Knowing which of the three you actually need is most of how you decide what to spend.
- Server-side ad spend ingest. Pulling spend data directly from Meta, TikTok, Google, and friends — daily, automatic, reconciled against actual orders. This is the expensive piece. Every app that does it well charges for it, and it's the single biggest reason a $9 spreadsheet won't keep up at scale.
- Per-shipment shipping and accurate COGS math. Modeling cost lines the way they actually behave: per-shipment for bundles, refund fees that stay with the processor, chargeback true cost, supplier price history. The dollar-accuracy work.
- LTV, cohort, and forecasting depth. Customer cohorts, repeat-purchase curves, predicted LTV, contribution forecasting. Matters more the bigger you get and the more your customer acquisition strategy depends on a longer payback horizon.
Most apps lead with one of these and treat the other two as supporting features. If you can name which of the three is the one your store actually needs right now, you can shortcut about 80% of the shopping process.
